Description
Πάτμος, Δωδεκάνησα.
Patmos Island, Dodecanese – Greece.
Traditional windmills located east of the Monastery of St. John the Theologian on a hill overlooking the port. The site constitutes a prime image for anyone approaching the island by sea.
Patmos Island is the holy island of Christians, where the Apocalypse of Saint John was written. Visitors of this Dodecanese island today are split into two groups, the first half that still come to the island because of its religious significance and the second half comes here to enjoy the lovely beaches, the serenity and the unique character of the island and its people. Patmos is mentioned in the Christian scriptural Book of Revelation. The book's introduction states that its author, St. John, was on Patmos when he was given and recorded a vision from Jesus Christ. Earliest Christian tradition identifies this writer as John the Apostle. As such, Patmos is a destination for Christian pilgrimage. Visitors can see the Cave of the Apocalypse where John is said to have received his Revelation.
